The last few volumes of Managing Director were on the weaker side but this volume was great and contained a lot of what I enjoy about the Shima series. There's the higher level business and political stuff but the power struggle between Yagi and Shima (even if somewhat one-sided) is the good stuff and I like the way that touches everything and makes it murkier.
Chen has been a dependable guy but there's also a bit of selling his soul to the devil to advance his career. Yagi has been a staunch ally of Shima's going all the way back to Section Chief but now that he's really getting the spotlight we're getting to see a different and unpleasant side of him that's turning him into an even bigger enemy than Konno was. And inspite of his asshole behavior, he's a smart and extremely capable businessman which makes him an actual threat to Shima as opposed to a nuisance like Konno.
This bleeds over into the way they both treat Sun Rui over what's happened. Neither wants to get screwed over but Shima knows how to handle things diplomatically while Yagi coldly views things in a very black and white manner where you're either on top or getting screwed which, combined with his racism, leads him to making a large misstep. But of course while Sun is a likable guy and someone Shima respects, he's done some underhanded stuff with this relationship previously so who's to say he's not pulling strings here?
Alternately, there is a loose end hanging around in the form of Zeng Liesheng who has every reason to want to get back at both Hatsushiba and Chufa.
