Maybe I wouldn't understand since I'm not Christian, but I figured even as a 'deal with the devil', giving himself up for eternal torture to weaken a threat to humanity like this would make him one of the best popes in history, rather than the worst. Isn't sacrifice one of the core tenants of Christianity?

I don't really get how a witch, or even the demon lords she represents, has access to God's "Book of Life". But then, this story takes a good deal of creative liberties with the Christian religion.
