I won't say a chapter like this was out of nowhere, but it's definitely jarring to go from pope soccer to this.
If anything this proves that the Pope was really trying to do his best to clean up all the rot that was going on in the Church, though it seems it was too late at this point to stop Vergil from falling into the cracks and also others from being abused and now this near world ending scenario

Sure he killed a bunch of people with his witch friends but he's gay and sad so we should feel sorry for him :meguuusad:
Nah, kill em all. God I really dislike everyone in this manga. Marco is the only one worth anything. Turn this into the adventures of Marco as he wipes out the demons and witches and then I'll forgive the author

This manga is really good at the whole 'morally grey' stuff.

No, it's not and no, it's nobody's first time being faced with blatant historical revisionism. Sodomy was illegal in Japan even before it was Japan. Just like Greece punished homosexuality with death in most city states and any traces of 'they are all gays!' is sources from THEIR ENEMIES AKA it was an insult and propaganda, not actually how they were, same as primae noctis, nobody actually did that.

1. sodomy only illegal in japan in 1872 under meiji era influenced by western law. japan didn't get influenced much by homophobic abrahamic religion. wakushu literally the norm in japan until the end of edo period
2. there are no death penlty on pre christian greece and roman. ancient greece literally littered with same sex relationship. Nero literally made temple for his male lovers. while modern homosexuality didn't fit well with ancient greece, it's more active vs submissive and being submissive is prejudiced and forbid to hold office and often used to attack your political opponent, but same sex relationship is part of daily life of ancient greece. the first recorded law against homosexuality in greece was during constantine II in late 4th century CE after christianity.
3. again, read tales of genji.

No, it was illegal long before that, they just didn't have what we consider a codified country wide legal code, we have direct reports of the japanese equivalent of the word 'sodomite' being recorded as the reason for an execution or honor killing, we literally have the letters and execution records.

Yes, there is, people would be killed for many crimes, including stealing lifestock or even wasting it or damage a food stockpile. Hell, the roman crucified you for tax evasion.

No, it wasn't, it was littered with enemy city states calling each others gay.

Nero literally made temple for his male lovers.
No, he didn't, he was accused of that decades to centuries after his death by people who never knew him and were enemies of his descendent.

This is pure cope, even some nobles died or were exiled for being gay. Also said 'same sex relationships' were with little boys, again as an insult and propaganda against enemies, calling them gay pedophiles, with the greeks making no difference between a gay and a pedophile.

3. again, read tales of genji.
Again, one tale about a rapist getting castrated and kept in secret as a fake concubine doesn't make Japan gay, especially when the castrated man, now considered a eunuch and not a man anymore, is KEPT secret and risked execution. This is like saying Modern Japan is the Ptolemais dynasty because Aoi No Sora exist.

You have not the slightest clue what you're talking about.

Nah.... I knew it already from very first time when i was an otaku in 2010's era. But in that era most of manga or anime about Gay or Lesbian are not that very common to see, well... IDK pretty well because my most watched and read ani-manga is mostly Romance and Ecchi Harem but I do remember is Japan in 2010's ani-manga are not very common with BL and GL genres

the first popular shoujo manga is literally about class S yuri. the godfather of manga, osamu tezuka write at least 2 series about LGBT characters. again what is this puritans suddenly realize japan is not their homogenius heterogen heaven they thought it was? they never were. it was the west that actually influence those value into japan during meiji era

dude, you sound never read anything from anything classical. again, sure homosexuality wasn't normalized, but lot of people practice it and there are no codified law against it. shinto didn't have it, pre christian ancient greece or rome didn't have it. sure it used as polemics against your enemy since it's not "normal" and "sign of weakness", but again, you see them recorded being practiced over and over. you can read historia naturalis by pliny the elder. the amount of homosexuality written there are lot. again, my point wasn't that there are no homosexuality discrimination at all back then, but they wasn't treated as social plague hunted to extension like the current abrahamic religions supremacy today.
