Here's an animated version of Kachi Kachi Yama with English subtitles.

It seems to be a little sanitized compared to the version mentioned in the translator's note. The tanuki does still kill the wife (shown with the shadow of the tanuki landing blows with the mochi pestle, although the shadow of the wife is just offscreen) but they leave out the part about the tanuki feeding the farmer his dead wife in the stew.
This is a children’s story??

It's similar to how the original versions of many European folk tales that became children's fairy tales are actually fairly grisly. For example, in the Charles Perrault version of Little Red Riding Hood, the story ends with Red Riding Hood being eaten by the wolf instead of being saved by the woodcutter chopping the wolf open and saving Red Riding Hood and her Grandmother like in the more famous Brothers Grimm version.
