That's still a very poor choice of implementation, locking what would otherwise be a QoL update behind a flat paywall; and not even one that puts any kind of marked improvement to the experience, nevermind the fact that the premise of the site itself is indeed an barely legal aggregate of what is meant to be fan-translated content.
Things are already a bit weird with official publishers, but that's acceptable. This is nearly as bad as the AI-Advertisements that were running a few months back, at least in terms of how shitty the move is.

The anime piracy app I use also have a subscription, but even with no guarantee for good quality, it's 9 months worth of premium access compared to 1 of mangadex for the same price
