The Norwegian Krone conversion took me back-- even if that "back" was "back when all you had to do to convert JPY to USD was move the decimal point two places".

Thank you for the translation.

I think only japanese people bathe together.
I just attributed it to the kid's personality, honestly, considering this man's still a stranger to the family and I don't think the Japanese would bathe (in their private bathrooms) with just anyone. Alternatively, he's read a bunch of manga, so one could have also supposed he got the idea from there.

Anyone can be like that, no matter how unlikely it would be for them, given the culture. It just needs to be established as the character's personal peculiarity. There's also yet to be a context where we could clearly see that Hagimoto didn't process that this isn't typical for Brazilians.

He doesn't need to adhere to the "general representation" of the culture at all times. Though, it would definitely be beneficial for him to have enough confident awareness of the culture to know how he can depict deviations without it being jarring or severely misrepresentative-- well, that, and so he can guard against being jerked around too much by various Brazilians representing their perceptions of their culture to a Japanese man.

...you think they'd be willing to contract a cultural consultant?

I agree to a certain extent, but the shower scene is especially controversial in Brazil. A cultural consultant would be the best to filter information, but I don't know if he wants one (or even already have). Like, his interactions with the Brazilian precede the idea of the manga itself and he seems to have really liked it. Nowadays, for example, he is invested in the Brazilian comics industry, not only using research material, but doing public reviews and sharing some small independent works he finds for free.
However, apart from this scene. So far the manga is representing a favela well. It has the dramatization of a manga, but it is realistic enough.

I'm curious as to how it's "especially controversial" rather than merely "out of place" and theoretically reconcilable as being a product of the kid's openness and exposure to Japanese culture through manga.

It's because it has strong sexual implications, and the age gap make this scene so unconfortable. I've been reading manga for a while and even though I understand this scene, it's difficult not to find it strange due to the cultural background. Even is if the child is open-minded, the mother would not be. Brazil and nudity are a complex topic, because we are known for being open about our sexual expression, but we can be extremely conservative on specific things, to the point of being hypocritical. If I had to bet (because I'm not a sociologist, not even to talk about my own country) I would guess that it's because of the Catholic influence. I'm not the best to talk about this, and i hope some other brazilian shows up and help me explain.

And this solves the issues pointed out related to the factions (is what we call the gangs here).
São Paulo have only one faction, Rio de Janeiro have a faction war and also have other type of criminal organization called militia
