The first shounen battle manga I finished. If that's what you're looking for this hits all the notes and has a great ending. Really top tier.

Review: An archetypical shounen fantasy battle manga by the author of "MÄR". It's one of the lesser known complete manga in its category along with "Psyren", "Kekkaishi", "Yu Yu Hakusho", "Shaman King", and "GetBackers".

I checked out this manga after seeing people comparing an aspect of it with something that happened in Boku no Hero Academia recently, but it's very disappointing tbh.

It does a lot of telling rather than showing; there's hardly any suspense as before you can even have any questions, the characters conveniently explain everything to you. The plot is not engaging in the least, considering that the incredibly basic plot is buffered by superficial interactions. The character motivations are way too simplistic, . The art style itself is alright but its a pity that there's a lot of same face syndrome going on, and that hardly anything new is done with the presentation and compositio: you see one chapter you've seen them all and this gets boring real fast.

Basically, this manga hasn't aged well. It gets the very basics of what makes a shonen story but does it in such a by the book manner that everything is blatantly predictable and I havne't encountred a single redeeming moment. I also have some issues with the way it treats certain topics such as sexuality, plus the logic used by the protagonists tedns to fall apart if you give it more thought:

The answer to the riddle in the story to tell apart the authors of an imitaion and original story is to have them continue it. Sounds good at first, but there's actually a lot of instances where the 'imitators' whether people hired to write sequels for deceased authors or even fanfiction, to name a few examples, do have the capacity to plausibly continue the original story and it doesn't actually prove much.

I reccommed Hunter x Hunter (skimming through Recca honestly made me reread HxH and rekindled my interest for HxH again) or something like Rave if you want something from a similar era.

Idk if this deserves the ecchi tag, tbh. It has occasional moments but it's mostly about fighting. It's basically Yuyu hakusho with human ninja instead of youkai.

@TitaniumChloride why compare to bnha?
Its really different, recca is 90's manga like rurrouni kenshin, yu yu hakusho, dragon ball.

Now you recommend Hunter x hunter then do you read yu yu hakusho?

Same author btw

@ryanzc Not comparing them at all, just that something that happened in BNHA made me curious about this manga and got me reading it.

Not gonna lie, when I saw this notification I realised I completely forgot what Flame of Recca was about despite having read the complete story from start to finish before. Had to skim the last chapter a bit for a reminder. It was that memorable for me.

Yeah, I read both hunter x hunter and yu yu hakusho. I like YYH, but HxH is def my favourite of the two. YYH is also waaay better than Flame of Recca so yeah.

@TitaniumChloride

You sound like a fucking reta+rd Flame of recca is way better than mha which is the most generic lackluster battle shounen ever made, not a single orignal bone in that wack series. And YuYu hakshou is extremely midecore with so many plot conveniences, Out of nowhere Yusuke is the descendant of a demon lord, so many asspulls in yu yu hakshou.

Flame of recca is more cohesive and tightly written than any of those mediocre seires. And Hunter X Hunter is extremely overrated i USED TO LIKE hxh but people like you extremely overhype it, its a very mid manga at best RANDOM GON POWERUP TRANSFORMATION WHEN KAITO DIES AND HE KILLS PITOU, BUT THATS GOOD WRITING TO AN IDIOT LIKE U. Recca is definitely better you dont find any asspulls or plot conveniences in this series.

:meguu: Recca no homo. I came across this same time as yuyu hakusho and then went with yuyu. Couldn't watch both because middle class asian household and stuff.
