In my opinion it might in all honesty be better than the anime, it takes a lot of time to flesh out side characters more, and has a lot more content than the anime. It's lost the clean execution of allegories found in "swinging the bat", sparkling drinks, and no longer prominently features guitars, but it has spades of new things added such as stronger world-building, and a completely different ending which is much more ambiguous than the anime's. I'd also say some scenes in the anime get a bit too cluttered and disorienting which is the point of such scenes but I feel the manga executes that disorientation and suspense perfectly whilst making what occurs much clearer at the same time, such as the incident between Naota and his dad, not gonna spoil but those who have read know what I'm talking about.
I want to be clear I'm not saying the anime is bad, it's still phenomenal and one of my favourite shows of all time, but the manga is incredible in it's own ways, both have things they do better than the other and I recommend consuming both.
(oh yeah the manga feels kinda homophobic at times but I'm not sure if that's just early 2000s humour or genuine discrimination, either way it isn't that prominent and doesn't significantly harm the story in the slightest, if you're starting it just be ready for that though)
