That was an extreme amount of vitriol from one girl. On the one hand, children can be nasty little pieces of work, on the other hand, I wonder what vitriol her parrents regularly spit out.

U guys criticized her, but when a manga features an actual trans character, the comment section are full of comments that are even more vile.

Worse, those are made by adults.
you say this as if our main character isn't functionally identical to a trans girl? She came out to her family and to the school and is facing backlash and everything. I think it's only "dressing up in a lie" in the sense that she's centering her actions around a guy she likes and not realizing that a cis person wouldn't go through all this effort just to steal away someone's boyfriend. she hasn't even said "actually I'm a guy" a single time lol

Why wouldn't a cis person go this far ?
I mean if you were a guy really in love with another guy but this guy doesn't seem interested in you and gets in a relationship with a girl, you would probably think he's straight or at least that he likes what is considered "for girls". Since you'd be in love you might want to change to meet his preference, no?
Well I guess some people would probably mind but that depends on what you are ready to do to get a once in a life time crush to like you.

I have personally never been in love so I might be wrong but from what I understand of it people in true love could be ready to do anything in the sake of love.
I have also never understood the reason trans people use for being trans either though so my understanding might be wrong.

Well, it varies from person to person. Some people are comfortable cross-dressing, some aren't, and it has to do with your own concept of your identity. What I mean by "a cis person wouldn't go this far" is that Kokuyou is socially transitioning to everyone (regardless of their identity, the acts being done in this manga are objectively a social transition). A cis person comfortable with cross-dressing probably wouldn't keep up the act 24-7, and would probably admit to their identity being being a man at least in front of their family. Another factor is that, even though Kotaro seems straight, there are many different paths that a gay man could take. Accepting that it's one sided yearning is a very common trope in BL and GL. Or maybe even transparently expressing interest and hoping that your crush might be bi. Even just crossdressing in private as a shared secret could theoretically be an option. I'm just saying that coming out as trans to your family and your school and willingly subjecting yourself to bullying and abuse is just a bit far fetched if it's just for a crush (implying it's worth suffering through all that for more than just that one reason)

To be fair wanting to dress up as a girl, is different from wanting to actually turn into a girl. One is just an obsession of cute things, the other is gender identity that might also include sex change operation and/or the use of medicine to suppress hormones.

And while I think if the crossdressing guy in this manga has the ability to, he would go through the whole thing to become a woman. However it stems from his sexual attraction and not gender identity. Thus his desire to become a woman, or even dress as a woman, will stop the moment he succeeded going out with the guy he likes, or the moment he gives up trying to attract him.

I have to agree with the comment above, Mangaka's frequently use characters like ML. What they have in common is crush on male friend who is always Heterosexual, wear girl's uniform to look cuter and try to appeal to crush that way. Conflict comes from the crush deciding whether to compromise on their sexuality.

The key point to take from this is that first of all the character is Homosexual, everything else is secondary. It's extremely rare for a Mangaka to write a Trans character more's the pity :(
