I went and read the sequel and it opens with Kokuyou praying at a shrine to become a girl, getting upset that Shiro becomes a girl instead, and repeatedly states that they wish they were a girl throughout the currently translated 3 chapters.

You could probably point out that they refer to themselves as a boy when rejecting someone else but I take that more as a statement of “I’m a biological male, are you okay with that,” rather than just “I’m a boy.”

I dunno, it’s just how many times does a character need to say “I wish I was a girl” before we start questioning things anyways.
I think it can be confusing because the way English speaking people talk about trans identity is pretty different from the way Japanese speaking people talk about trans identity.

Japanese transgender people will often refer to in the current tense to themselves by there old gender. You can see this is in a few trans-autobiographical manga. But English speaking trans people never do this.

Somewhat over simplified: Japanese language is more along the lines of, "I'm a boy with a girl's heart." While English language is, "I'm a girl born with a male body."

I don't mean them being accepting is ominous, that's just based
I mean them being drawn like that

I just got the vibe of “we have ways of threatening the school if they don’t let you” altho I imagine it’d be pretty uncommon for this to happen in irl schools but I imagine other than those festival events were there’s a cross dressing aspect most ppl stay closeted til after they’re an adult tho MCs situation is a bit specific in wanting to be with a boy , although while having feelings as a teen are valid I’m sure there are plenty of ppl he’d be compatible with
