The author trying to write about america is failing miserably... dying hair to imitate caucasians??? They tried, I guess.

I don't know if it's Western/Eastern culture but I assumed Kang's issue was that he felt afraid to be bold in the US, it would mainly be attributed to the fact that he was Asian stereotype, when you're already discriminated you can be trapped identifying yourself with that group because others say so. the US can be overwhelming if you can't unite yourself with the identity, the night life and the political issues are it's own issue but with the media coverage, it's hard to ignore

I can understand how Kang feels, having been in his position once, wanting to hold on to your identity and not wanting to be seen as if you’re trying too hard to be something you aren’t. Tbh it’s not common in Asia to dye your hair a bright color. So the fact that he associates dying his hair with it being a Western thing is not such a huge stretch.
