Why, Japanese people? I don't think you understand how irritating your spinelessness can be... Why does every single Japanese MC go, "Throwing villagers as a decoy to a rabid monster? Tsk. Don't do that again, okay?" Like a slap on the wrists is going to stop someone who is about to rape a young girl from doing crime ever again.
Japanese MCs have no spine. He should have just executed that guy right then and there. There are tens of eyewitnesses that he tried to kill those villagers to save his own hide.
@Tairo Regular townsfolk wouldn't be able to stop giant fireballs, the C-Rank mage wouldn't be able to stop an A-Rank mage. That guy could have easily killed everyone in that village, after attempting to do so in front of the MC, and gotten away with it. However, the MC stands upright thanks to the wonders of magic (and not his spine), so he was allowed to leave with a slap on the wrists. What a compelling storytelling.

With what right would he have executed the guy ?
Leaving aside the fact that he doesn't want to stand out which he defiantly would if he just randomly executed a noble, who also happens to be a seemingly famous adventurer, he has no authority to punish him. That authority lies with the country or the guild or whatever, he would only get in trouble with the country for being some random upstart that decided he had the right to judge nobles and adventurers and execute them according to his own whims.
It would be a different thing if they were in battle and killing him would protect people but in this case where there is no imminent danger it's far more reasonable to just leave the criminals judgment to the people who's job it is to do so, the people that officially have the authority to do so.
He could use his connections to go the long way and have the guy arrested and tried for his crime, where I doubt he will get anywhere close to executed for attempted murder, you know being a noble and famous adventurer, he probably gets away with a fine or maybe prison time, and possibly a demotion in his adventurer rank or getting kicked out of the guild, but that's a whole lot of effort and wasted time for something the MC doesn't really care for, especially considering the guy is broken enough and there are enough witnesses that it will happen eventually either way.

@starburst98 Well, that's probably true. I just like to look at a story from a different perspective sometimes, especially if something doesn't seem to make sense or there's a lot of comments about it. I find that playing devil's advocate like that can make some stories more fun, even some of the bad ones, and it could be practice for seeing another's viewpoints in IRL discussions.
It can result in interpretations that make the whole story more enjoyable.

Leia's death is likely meant to be from the strain of using the force to speak to Ben from across the Galaxy, just like Luke's astral projection from The Last Jedi.
However, an interpretation that's more interesting for the story is that calling Ben just made her weak, and Rey accidentally killed her when she stabbed Ben. Maybe she felt the same pain that Ben felt, or it forcefully cut the connection, but either would act like a mental attack that would be too much for her when she's already weak.
To me, thinking about it this way makes the movie more enjoyable and adds a bunch of context and depth to the scene.
First, she was already dying and tried to call her son to give a final goodbye, but Rey cut the conversation short before she could say anything.
Second, the whole movie Rey has been worried about falling to the dark side and hurting those close to her. In this battle, she was attacking out of anger and stabbed Ben when he was distracted, exactly like a Sith. She even stabbed him with a Sith's lightsaber, and then immediately felt her spirit fade. It's literally her fear become real.
This explains why she heals Ben and tries to run away afterward. She felt guilty for denying them a last conversation, and ran to prevent being consumed by the dark side.
This interpretation adds tragedy to the story and has Rey experience actual failure and loss, with real consequences for the characters. It even helps move along Rey's character arc more organically than before, and it adds more depth to her character than the previous 2 movies combined.

I'm actually shocked that the A-ranker gave up that easily. I actually expected the author to use that as an excuse to do another curbstomp via the MC.
