I mean... they literally said it... this is a suicide mission commissioned by a lone high-ranking officer, done by a mercenary group that has recruited very obviously expendable soldiers, and they are in a submarine already en route for the target.

Then they present the very obvious liaison with that officer, which means she is a VIP in this group, the guy harasses her, gets stomped, and claims he wants to quit... in this situation, this level of stupidity can only be cured by death.
