I don't know how effective it would be, but being upfront from the start would probably help a lot. From what I understand, the insanity in idol fandoms stem from the fans developing parasocial romantic feelings for the idol, where they collectively "own" her, and are all her boyfriend. So, making it clear that her goal is to get with a specific guy from the start, she wouldn't be viewed as a romantic interest, but a cute underdog to cheer on. Besides, I think we all know how fanatic shippers can get.
