It's fascinating to think that the little girls coming of age, that one unique moment in time was immortalized for all time. Just a small chance meeting became a story for posterity.

I wonder if that hairpiece was kept as an heirloom or on display somewhere. It's interesting in that stuff from the 1800's that might have been perceived as cheap is actually valuable and collectible.

England does not have coming of age ceremonies?

Not any specifically to celebrate a child's introduction to adulthood. The closest equivalent at the time might have been "coming out" into society for girls around ages 16-18, where they might go to a debutante ball, but that was only for the upper class. There was also "breeching", when a boy aged 4-6 would change from wearing a dress into wearing breeches.
