Not sure what the original text was here, but the phrase I've seen used elsewhere is "it's darkest at the base of a lighthouse"; the beam can be seen miles away, but the base of the lighthouse is in its own shadow.

Same meaning, though: something's so close you don't even notice or consider it even when it's in front of you.
