I'm conflicted. On the one hand, I appreciate this person stepping up and doing their best to carry the series forward, and want to encourage more people supporting scanlation. On the other hand: this is a popular and widely adored series, you do a fantastic job with all of your works, and I want to see this rendered in the best quality possible. Is this really a good beginner scanlation work?

The quality of the translation is the most important factor for me. The subtlety of the dialogue is quite important for this series, so the highest priority is ensuring that the original meaning is faithfully rendered into English. If that is accomplished, I'm okay with some minor deficits in typesetting or fluidity of language (though if I'm being perfectly honest, I'd much prefer to see a quality product in all respects, for this manga in particular).

Yep, I prefer when honorifics are kept in the translations as well. Honorifics in romance manga are an indicator of how close characters are to each other and of other aspects of their relationship. While the focus is on the main couple, their relationships and honorific usage with other characters can be an important aspect in the character development of main characters.

Shunpei and An already call each other by their first names, so the trope of switching from last names to first names isn't applicable to them. If I remember correctly, Shunpei calls her An-chan in the original. I don't know if An uses "Shunpei-kun" or just "Shunpei".

Of course, it doesn't mean that every honorific should be kept. For example, I once saw Okyaku-sama being translated as "Dear Customer", which is much more natural than "Guest-sama" or "Client-sama". It also conveys the vibe of the lines spoken by shop clerks and other similar workers in Japan, which is different from how "Sir" and "Ma'am" are used in English. Another example – "Kami-sama" is translated just as "God" by pretty much every translator. But the standard "Name-san", "Name-kun", and "Name-chan", and even rarer ones like "-sama" and "-tan" can be kept without worrying about people who don't know them – they'll figure it out eventually.

We're reading a story about a foreign culture, and learning about that culture and their communication norms is part of the fun. That's why I also really appreciate it when translators include notes about untranslatable puns or cultural phenomena, like the explanation and the transcript of the Shiritori word game in chapter 41, when An-chan and Shunpei were stuck on the road because a fallen tree.

Not going to lie, I was pretty bummed out when the previous TL announced they were dropping the series. This is an absolute gem, and the last few chapters really feel like the romance is starting to kick into a higher gear!

Please translate the small dialogues or text, because they sometimes serve as an important continuation of the dialogue balloons, like on pages 3 and 11-14. About the formatting, it'll be better if you increase the spacing between lines, so the text doesn't look too stacked. And if you have time, you can start learning to translate the SFXs too, like what Senko has done consistently. Overall, it's quite a good translation, and I hope you continue improving your future translations.

personally a big fan of your scanlation quality, so it would be nice. that said, current new scanlator is also doing a good job (just needs to translate the small text outside the bubbles). maybe work together?

The translation looks really solid, for a begginer so I think it would be kinda a dick move to compete with someone just starting, especially if it's a really good translator.
Definitely wait a bit, you could maybe offer up to help a bit if that's something you don't mind doing? The more translators we have the more manga gets translated after all
