Excellent chapter. People have been staring into campfires for maybe a million years or so. Fire gave humans light, warmth, protection and a way to cook and purify water. Maybe it's this relaxing feeling of safety while staring into the fire that frees the brain and evokes memories like in this chapter.

Wow, such a tragic backstory ... no wonder the guy is so aloof with people and has a chip of his shoulder. Dunno what his mother's excuse is, but she's going down as a downright evil bitch in my book. I dunno if this is the case for a lot of Japanese people though, but why is it that whenever an orphan background is brought up, all the relatives always seem so unwilling to care for the orphaned character. Like what the fuck, you're family. My family, immediate and extended, would take in me or my sister, or my cousins, in a heartbeat if any of the parents in our families were to die. It's unfortunate that the opposite is true if it happens often.

Regardless though, weird to see that the author suddenly bring in this super serious chapter that gives exposition to backstory. Any backstory was fairly minimal, and some things were only hinted at, but stayed relatively between the two protagonists. And this introduction of the mysterious Kana. I don't think she'd be his mother, but I'm expecting some childhood friend or an ex or a mixture of both.
