In case it wasn’t clear, the lock pickers were wearing shirts that said Hanabata.

Actually, I want to know more about him in general. What does he do when not working? What is his house like? What does he spend his money on? Dude solo hunted for a long time and even now does most of the work, he must have fat stacks of cash.

Well, considering that Kikuru wants to quit to "enjoy his youth", it sounds like he did nothing but guard work for 2 years. He only hunts relatively weak monsters too. Because he hunted solo but there were also other guards around, it probably also took him more time to hunt monsters down. The monster population we're seeing now is unusual, because Hitamuki is luring everything towards her, and for the first few days of supervising the newbies, Kikuru's party retires too early and the regular culling of monsters gets postponed.

For someone like Kikuru who had nothing but hunting in his head for the 20 years he has lived, I bet he only spent his money on items and equipment that would help him in hunts.

Relatively weak monsters

Thing is, he never denied their criticisms. I don't recall there being anything saying that he does hunt strong monsters. He couldn't solo the overgrown yokegumo they fought for example, which is really a bad match for him when his specialties are preemptive attacks and evasion. He's the ace in his region because he has the most monster kills, not because he hunted a dragon or an ogre or something.

@jonsmth weve seen him kill every animal in the forest, en mass, while lugging around dead weight, generally easily with a single shot

he didnt defend himself because hes got the self confidence of spun sugar

and he could have beaten the spider in a 1v1, the problem was that the spider had no intention of that and if it ever considered him a threat it would have run like a bitch, like the 2 guards who had to abandon their third when it showed up, the spider was an extremely crafty type that was extremely hard to hit and if he ever gave it a real wound it would have ran away and likely attacked someone else which is why he focused on the "one hit one kill" strat

the spider was a freak of nature and strong enough to scare the entire forest away, not being able to easily beat it doesnt mean he cant handle strong monsters

>not because he hunted a dragon or an ogre or something.

do those even exist...?

so far only the spider has been show to actually be capable of fighting him, and even then he could dodge its attacks even while heavily wounded

@Kredim Yeah, add to that he is the absolute top guy in the guild with people panicking when he announced he wants to retire. You don't get a status like that by hunting weaklings. If it was just weaklings they can compensate with New Guys but they simply have nobody with the same amount of skill.

The area around the town is relatively peaceful, and the monsters they fought aren't too strong if something like an overgrown spider could easily upset the balance of the local wildlife. Hanabata can also handle them all just fine if Tokishikko doesn't incapacitate her first. It's just that we're so used to the other 3 newbies sucking so much that they make Kikuru look like a god.

> weve seen him kill every animal in the forest, en mass, while lugging around dead weight, generally easily with a single shot
Not the boar-like monsters though. It was Hanabata who slaughtered them. The mole and the toad were also beaten by Hanabata. The large number of monsters gathering around are thanks to Hitamuki finding them and also inadvertently luring them.

> and he could have beaten the spider in a 1v1, the problem was that the spider had no intention of that and if it ever considered him a threat it would have run like a bitch
That's not being able to beat it one on one. That's a stalemate. I think the spider ultimately would have the upper hand when Kikuru gets tired. I think the one-hit-kill indirect attack strat only applies for himself if he has to take it alone without setting up traps... and he came to the conclusion that he probably won't be able to kill it and he would just agitate it instead.

> do those even exist...?
If the monsters in the forest are already the strongest monsters in existence, then Kikuru could afford to be even a little bit more smug. I get the impression that they're in a mundane part of the country. I won't deny that those defeated guards were envious of Kikuru's achievements, but if Kikuru can't even boast about any particular strong or uncommon monster, then chances are, he was only remarkable for his kill count before he beat the overgrown yokegumo with Tokishikko.

im not really sure why you think the monsters around the town are relatively weak, but for the smug part he may not act confident but when asked which of them hed partner up with he picked Hitamuki because he was confident that he could hunt any monster on his own without ever getting hurt and the only way anyone could support him is just finding the monsters earlier than he could

I mean, aren't all the monsters that showed up have been regular low level JRPG monsters? I imagine the author would reserve the designs for the usual more menacing fantasy monsters like orcs and ogres for actual strong monsters. Sure enough, the first strong monster we saw is a spider. The bear was a 50-50 in my opinion - I've seen plenty of works which have worlds where they don't do bears justice.

> he picked Hitamuki because he was confident that he could hunt any monster on his own without ever getting hurt
Hitamuki just happened to be a good match for Kikuru's style. Kikuru's specialty: preemptive attacks and evasion. Hitamuki's specialty: scouting/detection and decoy.
Seems to be just a little bit of pragmatic thinking while having a distrust of the others' abilities at the time.
Before the spider, he never got hit, so he didn't need a healer anyway.
Tokishikko and Hanabata end up hurting their allies. Furthermore, the extra power or AoE isn't really necessary if a preemptive attack is enough to defeat a particular monster.
