The area around the town is relatively peaceful, and the monsters they fought aren't too strong if something like an overgrown spider could easily upset the balance of the local wildlife. Hanabata can also handle them all just fine if Tokishikko doesn't incapacitate her first. It's just that we're so used to the other 3 newbies sucking so much that they make Kikuru look like a god.
> weve seen him kill every animal in the forest, en mass, while lugging around dead weight, generally easily with a single shot
Not the boar-like monsters though. It was Hanabata who slaughtered them. The mole and the toad were also beaten by Hanabata. The large number of monsters gathering around are thanks to Hitamuki finding them and also inadvertently luring them.
> and he could have beaten the spider in a 1v1, the problem was that the spider had no intention of that and if it ever considered him a threat it would have run like a bitch
That's not being able to beat it one on one. That's a stalemate. I think the spider ultimately would have the upper hand when Kikuru gets tired. I think the one-hit-kill indirect attack strat only applies for himself if he has to take it alone without setting up traps... and he came to the conclusion that he probably won't be able to kill it and he would just agitate it instead.
> do those even exist...?
If the monsters in the forest are already the strongest monsters in existence, then Kikuru could afford to be even a little bit more smug. I get the impression that they're in a mundane part of the country. I won't deny that those defeated guards were envious of Kikuru's achievements, but if Kikuru can't even boast about any particular strong or uncommon monster, then chances are, he was only remarkable for his kill count before he beat the overgrown yokegumo with Tokishikko.
