I wonder how and why some authors and publishers can't figure out to speed up their series when it's so obvious that the high percentage of the people reached a consensus knowing the outcome due to overly slow or poorly developed storyline.

I'll have to disagree, Onodera was introduced pretty early and was developed quite a bit, even though we all knew she was going to lose at least she was in the race and you could see her in the rear view mirror. Shiori, you need a telescope... from an observatory.

@Eraviel Habit. And the belief that Akari's still 100% after Minami. That said, I've felt for quite some time now that his feelings for Shiori are more nostalgia driven than anything; basically, he's not really in love with her anymore, and probably hasn't been for years, but he still remembers their time together fondly, so now whenever he sees her, he gets a rush of nostalgia and is thinking he still likes her. Subconsciously, though, his attraction to her probably withered in the years they spent apart after she rejected him and he just never really paid attention to other girls afterwards to move on.

@John_Doe_Jersey It doesn't really have anything to do with a poorly developed storyline, so much as the fact that authors and publishers want to feature the main girl as much as they can, so they always put her on the cover of the first volume and manga readers are just savvy enough to put two and two together. For comparison, since this story draws on a similar premise, it's like going into Toradora and thinking anyone but Taiga had a chance. Her name's alluded to in the title alongside Ryuuji's (tora = tiger; taiga is the phonetic pronunciation of tiger; dora is part of the phonetic pronunciation of dragon (doragon), which is ryuu), so the series is all about how they end up together despite initially starting out as working to help the other out with their crush.

That said, in this case, a large part of why Shiori is still hanging around is the author's reluctance to abandon their premise, even though it's an artifact; I can certainly understand that hesitance as an author, myself. It's also that the desire to move into the top 10 and swap partners to their initial love interests is pretty much the driving force behind Jirou and Akari getting closer and advancing their relationship in the first place, so in a way, you kinda have to keep the "love interests" in play if for no other reason than to have motivation for the two leads.

@Vincentius Hmm, that's a sound reasoning. Actually, the last part you said makes sense when the author's reluctance to abandon the premise. It's like he's going to put Jirou in a situation like this:

And the way you explained it, I can see the possibility that Minami will go after the childhood friend as well.
