She's absolutely right to do so as well, if she doesn't take it personally; for example it's noted the snow being different may cause avalanches at different places and that may get people killed.

My read is that she's focused on the duty that's been drilled into and trained for years for. But I've got hope, especially since she already had to stop herself from being "optimistic" of somethine else taking up the role.

This doesn't have a yuri tag, so I doubt that will happen, but who knows.
Personally, I am fine with whatever our mc is happy with.
Although, the mother, daughter thing between Fenrir and Elle takes priority in my list for now in this manga.
I don't dislike any of the characters so far.

I know Fenrir was a woman as a human, but I don’t think “it” has a gender as a wolf, or maybe even male. But you’re right, since there’s no yuri or shoujo ai tag, then it won’t be Fenrir x Elle if Fenrir is female.
