The coffee of Gabai was bitter indeed.

As I get older, and I see my parents less and less, seeing them be there when I was a child thinking they will be there forever and taking such ideas for granted.
It's moments like these that make you realize they won't be there forever, but always in our hearts.
Call your mom, dad, tell them you love them!

This manga was interesting from an auto-biography standpoint for the earliest chapters but as it went on it started becoming evident Its "obviously idealistic" direction that lacks honesty. (apparently the author himself said it's "80% true 20% lies").

On one hand it's understandable given that the original book was initially rejected by publishers multiple times before which I'm guessing made transparent the necessitity of rewriting under a far more "entertaining" narrative but what really irks me is seeing how vindictive it feels towards the people in real life that the author probably disliked. Hard to take seriously the biased perspective shown where everyone bows to the author's can-do-no-wrong family, with every other mother being drawn with ugly features and Tanuma being a cartoonish type of bully that conveniently always receives the short end of stick for his misdeeds. Instead of real-life tales under a mature perspective (it's a seinen!) we're getting an embellished kiddy comic with feel-good morality lessons.
