Okay. Maybe it's because of the body horror. For me, this was genuinely creepy.

Ah fuck. This one is actually horrifying. Very little body horror that isn't just "hey look weird biology" or "what if pretty girl but sometimes not", but the psychological horror is just fantastic. The fact that she makes the decision that almost every reader is screaming at her to make, then it turns out to be the wrong one, is just fantastic. Incredible subversion that manages to end on quite a chilling note, even if there's ultimately no gruesome scene where they tear her to bits.
