Welp, in the end, no matter how hard Maho tries, she's still destined to be the losing heroine
thank you for translation
Whats frustrating is that I feel like we've spent more time developing her feelings for Aikawa than Watanabe's feelings for him. We were introduced to the story with the former just already having romantic feelings for the MC due to some past event and progression for their chemistry has been really really slow. We still don't have a clear reason why she likes him. Meanwhile we saw Maho develop feelings for the MC in real time. It feels natural to want to root for her over the female lead in these circumstances. In another story the female lead would be the childhood friend with a crush and just expected no one else to fall for the MC until she worked up the courage to confess.
Edit: Skipped chapter 12. Good god is this dumb with Chapter 12 in mind. Jesus christ. Hanging out with this friend group just seems like such a detriment to the Manga and any actual progression at this point. It's not like we started with this setup. The male and female leads were already hanging out with each other. Their friend groups just happened to meet one day and they kept doing stuff as one group over the summer seemingly just because the girls wanted to give Riho the chance to confess to Aizawa. From Aizawa's perspective if he has a crush on one of the other two girls then he's only ever seen them interested in Aikawa (Maho has been playful flirting since the start and Watanabe has only ever really spent time with Aikawa), so it'd be dumb to keep hanging out together. That's not mentioning the fact that both girls were focused on giving their friend the chance to confess to him and he turned her down. He basically doesn't have a chance with them if either of them think it'd hurt their actual friend. Then from the main character's perspective there's no need to force the groups together AT ALL when he was already casually going on "basically dates" with Watanabe before all this. And this and chapter 12 seemed to imply Aikawa had ulterior motives of wanting to hang out with Watanabe because he was beginning to develop feelings for her. But son, you were casually hanging out with her by yourself before chapter 7. For God's sake they went to the aquarium together. This is like anti-progress.
The worst part is, that this isn't even necessary for the dumb love triangle plot. There was ALREADY another girl hinted at having a crush on the MC. Poor class rep just got completely ignored and forgotten about. The drama here is so weird because it has so little with do with the main couple. If this wants to be some hyper soap opera coming of age story about how a friend group fell apart due to some weird love dodecahedron then it should've presented that from the start. This drama doesn't even work as drama because these people don't actually have a reason to be hanging out. They're not even all really friends. They JUST started mixing friend groups for the summer with the beach chapter. I assumed it was because Riho told her friends she liked Aizawa. There's no actual reason to repair a friendship like ya'll had one to begin with. What is Maho talking about fixing what she broke?? Girl you are barely friends. Aside from Watanabe the other girls had to get introduced to Aikawa in chapter 4. Neither the MC nor any of the other characters have a real reason to push for them to keep hanging out after the failed confession from that other girl. And the author hasn't done anything to make me care about those characters on their own or make me want to keep seeing more of them.
