Looking nerdy and BEING nerdy are two different things. After all, the looks can be deceiving, and she didn't carry anything that outed her as an otaku on that first meeting, let alone act as one.

And she didn't even looked nerdy or like an otaku, she looked like a normal serious student. So the other just assumed she want to become a gyaru or be more stylish.
