Usually I feel that otaku-friendly gyarus are just a cynical way for authors to appeal to loser audiences, but something about how this author writes gyarus feels very genuine. They feel kind without being contrived.
Such a weird judgment on "otaku" part, guy is having his own club/intrests, is him not being on football/basketball/baseball team automaticly makes him otaku?

Also, just noticed, translator also redraws noises, I pity poor soul, not many do put in work like that. Thanks for 2 chapters per day, mighty translator!

It helps that the guy here isn't a boring gloomy loner like is so common. He's a fun and interesting person on his own, so the gyarus being nice to him doesn't feel out of place

To be fair, it's very light on sfx and more importantly, on backgrounds. But you're welcome all the same.

He did say that this here feels more genuine, lots of manga Authors write their girls head over heals for a looser guy that doesn't show or reciprocates feelings, doesn't initiate, doesn't care about his looks and is a total wimp with little courage who also rejects any advances from the girls.

To top it off the girl will like him because he did something nice once, it feels like loser self insert bait with some of these mangas.

Yeah, his interests are exactly what makes him an otaku. Of course, otakus have their own interests, it's basically what defines them as otakus but their interests are also outside the norm. Doesn't make them bad obviously but most people aren't going to understand those interests, especially this guy's, and especially gyarus.

The whole gyaru girl and otaku guy romcom genre is all about the "opposites attract" contrast between 2 very almost diametrically opposite archetypes.

Gyarus are flamboyant, extroverted, bold, and interested in stuff considered normal for women like fashion, cute boys, and makeup. Otakus are reserved, introverted, and their interests are niche.

I admit that most of these stories honestly don't do a good job of establishing any kind of credible reason the gyaru likes the guy.

I think if this story goes that route, it'll probably only happen once it goes over what's going on with otaku-kun in his homelife or whatever. As it is now, the girl is only curious in him and he has no interest outside of thinking she's a tsuchinoko. I do wonder if the story might go the route of otaku-kun being secretly handsome under his glasses, lol. He was looking a little more main characterish there in the beginning, lol.

the guy is literally by definition of otaku, the judgement the original comment was making was on the genre and definitely not on this guy.

Do you think otaku means something it doesn't?

I thought I did, went to google definition, turns out people thats are obsessed with object of their intrest, not specifically anime/manga, even so, I don't think guy goes overboard with what you'd call a hobby of a dude (with no friends?)

Yeah I'll take this kind of character compared to a looser creep like in Hajimete no Gal

An otaku is simply a term used for a nerd who obsesses about one subject in particular. Anime otaku obsess over anime, manga otaku over manga, idol otaku over idols. There are even baseball otaku who spend all their spare time going to games, pouring over baseball stats and collecting obscure baseball memorabilia. This MC is simply a paranormal otaku, like the GOAT Okarun. It's not a slam against him, but simply an accurate description of his character
