I'm kinda loving how the thing that keeps bailing Kaiji and pals out is their ability to make friends. The Center of the Earth owner, Kaiji's mom, the campers, Chang and Mario themselves... having allies you can honestly trust gives the crew an advantage over Teiai, who can only intimidate and extort people into cooperating.

@pdonk i think the moral of kaiji changes as fukumoto's mental state improves. im sure he was quite depressed and disappointed at the world when he started drawing (kaiji 1, kurosawa) but he's gotten a lot happier (zero, mamiya, 24-oku)

remember that at the start of this series (and ostensibly until one poker hen), kaiji's downfall was exactly because he trusted his friends.

remember ando? remember furuhata? endou? the 2 49'ers who ended up backstabbing him to their boss?

I’m definitely uncertain how this series will end. On one hand I’m so glad Kaiji is finally not getting completely fucked (though we’ve had close calls), especially after the end of part 2. Seeing him crawl his way back with mahjong, then risking it all on Chang and Mario, then making a tremendous comeback in the two card poker game, absolutely wild ride. I really want him to end this series on a happy note, but part of me really thinks the ending is going to be Kaiji escaping with all this money, but getting bored or depressed afterwards. He feels like the sort of character who lives not necessarily for getting more money, but the act of gambling itself.

Granted that’s just my interpretation, I just want Kaiji to live happily lol.

@cromat yeah, I feel like ever since One Poker, things have turned around. His current success vindicates his past "mistakes" - he was right to try to trust others, continuing to trust, even after being betrayed. Kaiji wasn't the one in the wrong, it was the others for letting him down.

Granted, that "moral" doesn't appear at all without the full scope of the series, and there's still time for everything to go tits up :p

i can imagine there being a scenario where either the mazda guy tells the campers, or the campers find out about kaiji and co themselves, and greed gets the best of them and they try to lure them into a trap for the reward money.

now that you mention it, I really hope this arc is really about that.
with all the shit he's been going through, Kaiji deserves good people he can trust.
(also his childhood-friend(?) on his mom apartment that lend him his motorbike comin in clutch too).
