Wait, but if this game is anything like, say, for example Smash Brawl story mode, then can't P2 just hit start (or any other similar button) to follow after P1 automatically and stop themselves from being killed off-screen? Though seeing as they skipped all the dialogue, I guess they also skipped the tutorial too...
