The whole manga is a retcon. It's been established in the main series that the game like aspects were made from rich people watching the fights while the Gantz tehcnology came from the all known Aliens, received by the daughter from the old rich man from Germany so that whole setting can't exist in the Edo period already.

I actually asked Oku about this on Twitter and he said I should just think of it as alternative universe.

Now the manga just straight up said you know what. I dont even want to recycle the old story anymore. I will just reuse the same thing 1 to 1.

Time travel is the worst trope there is and it should never be used unless the whole story is based around it.
