I love to see roman era armies go rip but don't get the stakes... Like the author can say what they want but the empire can't win this. Like it is silly that even no the empire armies don't just break when they spot the first tank. Like was thinking the author would go that the JSDF needed to go back home because of the gate closing forcing the remaining forces to have a lot more trouble giving the empire a fighting chance but now like the comment before me said M16 goes brrrrrrrrr

That wasn't actually such a bad tactic from the empire, but of course it was insufficient. The open plain also wasn't the greatest choice because it ultimately favours the side with the longer range, even if the first minutes of the ambush were more chaotic close combat. All in all I'd guess the empire still can't understand, at all, JSDF's full combat power.

Pride. Manly Pride, especially Zorzal's faction is still stuck in the old way of thinking "Glory in war". Even upon learning that there are countries beyond the Gate and more powerful than Japan, they still want to conquer Japan and the lands beyond the Gate.

I just remembered, in the LN, there's 1 general of Zorzal's faction that said he didn't want to surrender to Pina since she is a woman and he doesn't want to be defeated by a woman, or that what I remembered

They don't have a choice, they're too indoctrinated/far deep to oppose Zorzal or the nobles that sided with him. If they run or don't come back with a victory/are severely maimed Zorzal's men will kill the soldier's families and them.

Like Freeza in DBZA said to his men while on Earth: "You can die to him (Trunks) or you can die to me."

This is now the Rebellion against the Empire/Japan. The Empire stopped the fight against Japan as soon as the Emperor was rescued from Zorzal, and he declared Pina Crown-Princess and in-charge.

Like you said, the biggest douche leader is the only reason the empire is still trying to fight... remember that the Empire is a Monarchy, only the Emperor can decide if he surrenders or not and right now Zorsal is seen as the Emperor even if he was manipulated to continue the war. The soldiers have only two choices, to fight or to be killed for treason

It's not like most of the soldiers or monsters would even know what they are up against. They haven't got any mass media. Just rumours spread by travellers and bards. Those who have fought against the JSDF in the past are now mostly on JSDF's side, out of action, or dead. So, the soldiers would know what they are told by their superiors, who also might not know that much but even if they knew, they wouldn't demoralise their own troops. In other words, the soldiers might even believe they have a chance.

Pride. Remember a lot of their troops didn't witness what Japan can do or underestimate them. Those that do try to respect it. They don't have video coverage to rely on what happened. Just reports & rumours that can be easily falsified

Yea pretty much all the ambushes could have been avoided if they used thermals since it not like the enemy would have understand it or even have a any ways to combat that. Honestly if your going to make a story about war that is one sided you might as well make it extremely one-sided and show all the cool stuff and how the other side has no hope at all.
