I also thought it was weird the mom was from a well-off family but didn't attend high school. Maybe it meant university there? That would make slightly more sense, but maybe she came from a rich, but really traditional family in which she was expected to marry young and be a housewife for the rest of her life. That would also explain why the fuck she never worked, even after her husband died and she was near poverty. The dude had to sell his body to handle her goddamn spoiled bitch of a mother.

@Senros Yeah, high school in Japan is a little closer to post-secondary education in the rest of the world in how it's treated. Getting a job without a high school degree isn't as looked down upon and entrance exams are hard, so it makes more sense for a rich family to tell their daughter not to bother, though it is a bad idea.
