@aomeng I don't think he cares about the feelings of homophobes. I think he is fearful that someone being "worried" will translate into them being mean to his friend. Plenty of people try to hide their homophobia by claiming they are "just concerned" about how being gay will "make your life so much harder," as if being gay were a casual lifestyle choice. It's nonsense, but that does not stop homophobia from existing, even in people who aren't overtly hateful. I agree with Mochigi that while you shouldn't be afraid to be who you are, you also shouldn't feel guilty for being careful about who you come out to.
Also I have no clue where you got the idea the US is a bastion of pro LGBT sentiment. Like sure we got gay marriage/adoption but outside liberal cities you still have a lot of bigots.
