And it was fun seeing something different from the "clumsy girl breaks dishes" trope. That's overused in anime & manga.

For that word you translated as "hometown" I think "They remind me of home." would work quite well. Used in that fashion it has broader meaning than just "the place where I live(d)." It can mean something invokes memories of the place you grew up, the surrounding community, etc. That seems to fit with your explanation of what 故乡 means.
