Isn't ryu the Chinese dragon as well? Why does the "common dragon", which sounds like a western dragon, have such a simple kanji compared to ryu? Maybe I'm just really ignorant.

Yeah, ryu are basically analogous to Chinese "long" dragons. For the kanji, think of it like the character given for "dragon" is a more broad term for all flying lizards, and the characters given for "ryu," which includes the previous character, is a more specific term for Chinese dragons.

Should be able to fly, Chinese dragons have power to control the weather.

My guess is that her problem was she was trying to fly the same way as winged dragons, when the 'real' way for her to fly is through controlling the wind itself (which is maybe why she's the only one who can face the upcoming storm, while the others have to 'fight' against the wind she can just tell it 'no u')

Even in this chapter we saw her 'control lightning', so if she can learn of her own potential she should be able to even call down lightning strike from above.

Ryu in Japanese, Loong in Chinese, basically eastern dragon. These dragons just fly like superman, don't even need clouds. Even in another story, every Lunar New Year, carp fish pass some trials to turn into these eastern dragons to fly to heaven.

This probably falls under her contract forbidding direct interference. If she figured it out on her own, good. But Tiamat cannot divulge the information. Hence the workaround of using Souma to tell her.
