It was a huge, bloody affair that Licia's mom only survived because she was at Albert's property and not in the running. When all others were dead, she came back and took the throne.

Duchess Excel wants to make sure this won't happen again, so this batch of wives are friends and Liscia will have the first kid(s) with the king to have uncontested right to rule.

She was legally adapted by the previous king and queen making her sister to Liscia (and through Souma and Liscia's engagement/marriage making Souma her legal brother, she never stop seeing her bio-mom or little brother as family, she basically has both an mother and adapted mother, and adapted father, multiple adapted sisters(all souma's fiancees/wives), and adapted brother(Souma), and a real brother.

It's so rare for me to prefer a manga over the anime and the light novel of the same source material. This one is honestly an exception. Its drawings are much better than the anime, and its pacing is more balanced than the light novel. This manga definitely deserves 9/10 in my book.
