Lets not forget the food you would need to keep on board for the dragon. Do they unlatch it one or two times a day to let it hunt for food? It probably needs rest like a horse too. artificial propulsion devices are better even if they need fuel space, assuming the specs and cost justify the change (but im sure they would).
