Love Triangles are just such a overused staple at this point that whenever I see them, I tend to think "Just date both, there problem solved." I would even accept the characters discussing it, and deciding against it. Just have the conversation and see if it'll work. If not, Ok. Go back to being a rivalry based love triangle.

Lapis is by far the most fascinating character in the story, there is a great balance in showing her as a confused and somewhat misunderstood teenager but at the same time, there are subtle hints to show that she is a villain. I read her interactions with Diana as her stating her claim over Natori under that mask of politeness for no other reason than to be petty.

Rather than spite, I sense a sadness in Lapis in her interaction with Diana. Beyond Diana reminding her of her childhood friend, it also feels like she is making arrangements for after her own death. Yes, she absolutely wants Natori for herself, but she still plans to let go of her when the mass murder plan enters the final stage. Since she knows Diana is both strong and cares for Natori, the thought that Diana could protect Natori after she's gone might give her some relief. So the compliments and the headpat seem genuine to me.

Lapis also seemed disturbed when it was suggested that Natori should find a man to marry. Simply watching Natori socialize with men at the party seemed to make her anxious. In contrast, she does not look put off as she listens to Diana talk about Natori, despite Diana's obvious crush.
