It's called syncretism. They are rather spiritual (Shintoism is an animist (in reference to "Anima", what animates things) religion to start with), so they don't have any problem integrating other holidays as long as it fits their needs. =/ This is why you have a bunch of religion peacefully cohabitating there. (Wasn't always the case though)
