Getting a flashback like this so far into the story feels so weird.

this flashback should be in chapter 3 , where they intro these characters. also i read the WN after reading this manga because i cant wait for the manga. and they really cut some stuff and rearrange the story for the manga version.

my guess would be, that the author simply did not meet the expectations of their editor before when designing the next chapters, so as a somewhat safe fallback, they decided to just go with the "origin" story.

Well, this flashback arc thingey were originated from the web novel, and it's happened during the 3rd chapter of the story, after the MC fights with the rogue Elf scientists and Sasha & co (Shion and the soul dragon stuffs weren't available on the web novel).

So the manga version actually delays the flashback "filler" arc, which makes it kinda redundant for some people, especially when the story were about to enter a new arc.

i'll be honest i really don't care about the backstory of what he did while in the abyss, he lvld up and made an army that's all we need to know and we learned that in the beginning of the series. i want to see him take revenge on those who betrayed him.
