The entire concept of a translation of a song lyrics is subject to a copyright only in a foreign country is still inconceivable for me.One must wonder how Japanese music rightsholders would be upset at their songs getting more international recognition. It's not like a bunch of text in a manga is the equivalent of a pirated mp3.
I suppose there is the idea that if the content of the song (lyrics) contributes to the creative output and therefore the (financial) success of the work, then those rightholders should be compensated, but it's still awfully shortsighted and greedy* to me.
