Bait used to be believable…it's bizarre to completely ignore the sexual 'scene' with this character where he's a man and they're girls. there should be desire, fear of the other's desire, jealousy - even if you just raise the question and then make a funny moment and then move on entirely, like this manga does with all its serious topics, you can't just ignore them. just a testament to how perverted japanese culture has become in masculinity and femininity then.
after he loses the map they do take on male and female roles in how he's caught up in ambitious abstractions while the girls remind him of practical and even sensual goods. but then he just leaves. it's not nearly enough to make up for the problem.
i guess (e.g. with the lack of predators) the post-apocalyptic setting is really more about modern society with its broken-down bonds, but this depiction is still wrong because it suggests the modern lack of procreative drive is inevitable instead of being a consequence of state-enforced feminism. well, i guess the lack of hope about rebuilding society in the manga is really a lack of hope about ever rebuilding modern society.
well when it gets rebuilt it sure as hell wont be thanks to the existentialists

Ok to some extent I understand what you are trying to say but also not? Wdym perverted masculinity and femininity?? Also ignoring your qualms about the sorry state of mordern society, doesn't his behaviour or lack of sexual desire for the girls make sense specifically in the context of this manga and its scenario? I mean all of them are literally showing signs of clinical depression, the dude is down right suicidal and lacks attachment or propose in everything, even in the context of rl I doubt such a person will hold any sexual desires or fantasies.it's bizarre to completely ignore the sexual 'scene' with this character where he's a man and they're girls. there should be desire, fear of the other's desire, jealousy - even if you just raise the question and then make a funny moment and then move on entirely, like this manga does with all its serious topics, you can't just ignore them. just a testament to how perverted japanese culture has become in masculinity and femininity then.

by perverted i mean "unnatural," not "erotic." unnaturally asexual & infertile, in this case.Ok to some extent I understand what you are trying to say but also not? I don't know why you are so insistent on the fact that this manga is trying to depict the degredation of mordern society, In most likely scenario the author didn't include any real s*xual scenes purely because that wasn't the focus of this manga or that he didn't wanna get a content rating lolby perverted i mean "unnatural," not "erotic." unnaturally asexual & infertile, in this case.
i could agree with you if the manga made some acknowledgement of sexuality - maybe, they look at each other, and then look at each other looking at each other, with paneling that emphasizes the bodies - only to have kanazawa avoid it and move on because he's too depressed. this would fit modern conditions pretty well.
after all, the manga acknowledges the degradation of human faculties in other ways - like how kanazawa tries to talk and can't at first, because he hasn't done it in so long. this can be read as a reflection of current-day social atomization too of course.
but it's like the manga is saying, in contrast, that modern social degradation is going and will go so far to erase our sexuality that even its absence doesn't bear remarking. i'm not totally sure what i think of that. but in the existentialist frame of this manga, where our attention is constantly being called to what's left of our innermost impulses after everything that's socially constructed falls away, you'd think that sexual impulses would be among them. so leaving them out seems like a statement that sexuality is entirely socially constructed, which would be almost too retarded for this manga.
also, "the last opportunity mankind had to reproduce" is objectively important enough that for the manga to completely avoid remarking on it at all ... you just wonder what the meaning is.
Yea this manga is probably trying to depict that when society falls to this point people will not care for things like s*xual desire to the point that it is not even worth mentioning, not necessarily in the context of rl but just the fictional world the author has created. I mean just look at the place they are at, not a single tree, not a single other soul, just desolate jungle of abandoned concrete and metal pillars, just knowing that the food they hopelessly scavange for will inevitably run out and that they will soon die. Doubt any one will feel s*xual tension then, and not to mention they only met one man throughout their entire journey.but it's like the manga is saying, in contrast, that modern social degradation is going and will go so far to erase our sexuality that even its absence doesn't bear remarking. i'm not totally sure what i think of that. but in the existentialist frame of this manga, where our attention is constantly being called to what's left of our innermost impulses after everything that's socially constructed falls away, you'd think that sexual impulses would be among them. so leaving them out seems like a statement that sexuality is entirely socially constructed, which would be almost too retarded for this manga.
Yea cause in most likely scenario they were the last two people remaining on earth before they died :'/, the goal of the manga is simply to depict what the last days on earth for humanity would be like, the planet is so far gone that no amount of children they somehow produce will be able to live or thrive. The point is that no matter what you think, like how the species of homo sapiens came into existence they will naturally die too.also, "the last opportunity mankind had to reproduce" is objectively important enough that for the manga to completely avoid remarking on it at all ... you just wonder what the meaning is.
if that were right, then how would chito and yuuri have so many silly fun moments? those are even more incongruous to the lonely hostile setting. but the author's saying something like, "the world is absurd and uncaring, but the best thing is to live freely according to your own desires anyway." should we expect the desolation to suppress their sexuality, but not their playful imagination and friendly bantering? it seems unlikely.Yea this manga is probably trying to depict that when society falls to this point people will not care for things like s*xual desire to the point that it is not even worth mentioning, not necessarily in the context of rl but just the fictional world the author has created. Though idk, again there was prolly no ounce s*xual elements in the story simply because thats what the author wanted
other people have argued that this manga is at least partly "about modern society" better than i can. but even apart from that, this manga wants to show "the human condition," in an existentialist, subjectivist, sentimentalist way, where the most important thing about you is your authentic inner experiences and impulses, and whatever subjective values they lead you to adopt. (this profoundly silly, but the effort is still interesting.) the characters are all supposed to be relatably human. we see trust, betrayal, religion (at least negatively), having a home, hunger, loneliness, remembering the dead, the pleasure of making things, of giving gifts, dozens of parts of human nature treated. except for the sexual part, as though they didn't even have it.I don't know why you are so insistent on the fact that this manga is trying to depict the degredation of mordern society, In most likely scenario the author didn't include any real s*xual scenes purely because that wasn't the focus of this manga or that he didn't wanna get a content rating lol
I mean look to some extent I do agree with what you are trying to say, i dont know why you are so passionate about this but I see your point. However, as I said the lack of s*xual elements in this manga is most likely simply because the author didn't wanna, I mean the just look at their character designs they have jelly blobs faces instead of one resembling a real girl. The author prolly just wanted to write a cute yet sad story about two girls adventure alone in the last days of a worldif that were right, then how would chito and yuuri have so many silly fun moments? those are even more incongruous to the lonely hostile setting. but the author's saying something like, "the world is absurd and uncaring, but the best thing is to live freely according to your own desires anyway." should we expect the desolation to suppress their sexuality, but not their playful imagination and friendly bantering? it seems unlikely.
besides, half of the equation is not desire/fascination but fear. even if desire were impossible for the characters, the girls wouldn't know for sure that applied to kanazawa. there should be some apprehension that lasts past the time when they judge he's not going to kill them for their supplies.

i'm not asking for erotic scenes. like i suggested, there's ways to acknowledge it and say something interesting about it while still being G-rated.
I am a bit curious but why do you find this profoundly silly?other people have argued that this manga is at least partly "about modern society" better than i can. but even apart from that, this manga wants to show "the human condition," in an existentialist, subjectivist, sentimentalist way, where the most important thing about you is your authentic inner experiences and impulses, and whatever subjective values they lead you to adopt.
