Nuko’s first words were “nuko” right? This is mostly just speculation, but considering he learns words very quickly, he had to have heard someone say “nuko” to repeat it. Closest English word that sounds like “nuko” would be the word “nuke”, which imo explains why nuko was found in a hole which seemed to be made by an explosion in the past (because someone yelled “nuke” to warn about an incoming nuclear bomb maybe).

@PowertoKill 9 months ago but hey, still gonna say it, it's more of a translation thing here. The japanese word for cat is "neko" and since Chito said when they found it that it's like a cat she used "neko" and the creature heard it but wasn't able to communicate that well yet and said "nuko" instead. Chito also says "no it's just repeating". In the english sub for the anime, they also say "nuko" but the subtitles put "cut" for cat just with a "u"

Also fun fact: in the anime they hired top class voice actress Kana Hanazawa to voice the nuko. yes, THAT Kana Hanazawa, voice of Kanade in Angel Beats, Seryuu in Akame ga Kill, Mayuri in Steins Gate, Nadeko in Monogatari, Akane from Psycho-Pass, etc. ^^
