So... read this ending and the tankobon extra while listening to the song "Lullabye" from Arknights. Or don't, unless you want even the last spark to die out from inside of you.

The smallest song I'll sing to you,
Hushaby-a-by, a-by.
the earth is gently turning round,
As your little eyes close.
The smallest song I'll sing to you,
Hushaby-a-by.
As your little eyes close, now...

I believe this is not the end for them. The black stone is some sort of machine. When Yu asks "What's that?", Chi says "Seems like some black stone." and then Yu replies with "Is it just a stone, or....". I think the author is implying that the black stone is not exactly what it seems. Even in the last panel you can see to left strange markings starts to appear on the black surface similar to machine code. The extra chapter takes place right after this as you can see Chi and Yu sleeping and the shadows are at exactly the same place. Notice not much of the black stone is revealed currently. Then the camera pans out, we some other parts of the city and then when we come back, a large part of the stone is uncovered and a machine code pattern is glowing. THEY ARE STILL ALIVE.

none of that "they never woke up" bs.

i rest my case.

Heart wrenching. I had a feeling it was going to end like this, this story really liked to emphasis the “end”. But what I appreciate about this is that here, in their final moments, after witnessing loss, destruction, and the existential fear of unknowing time and time again, the story lets us know one final thing. Despite it all, they aren’t afraid.

thanks for the wonderful read :)

Imma be honest, this is the first and only manga to make me cry. I've read dozens of manga before, but this just hit me differently. Maybe its how relatable I find Chi and Yuu's friendship, maybe its the incredible atmosphere, maybe its the incredible soundtrack that accompanies the anime. I have never read anything like this and don't think I ever will.

They could have turned back many times throughout their journey and survived. But surviving isn't living. They lived a fulfilling life in a world where it was nearly impossible, and they got to go peacefully, together. Companionship can make even the worst worlds worth living.

Such a beautiful read. I thought I would cry like a baby when the inevitable arrived, but they achieved their goal together, and I like to think that they found their purpose and what made them happy.
