Exactly one year is a bit suspicious. Like, did grandpa really just happen to finish them exactly a year before the end of the world? Maybe Mr. Takeru decided to kill everyone right before that 365 days was up to "put them out of their misery" even though they wouldn't have died otherwise. Like a bootstrap paradox.
