It seems like he's implying the alcohol content is the problem with the fire wine. But with just a sip, that wouldn't really matter much. Taste, on the other hand, can vary a lot, especially with stronger spirits.

MC doesn't seem to be the kind of person who challenges all strong-looking people he encounters to duels.
And there doesn't seem to be much to gain from such a duel either. After all, MC's existing style is good enough for duels, that dwarf recommended him to get more used to battling hordes of weak monsters.

The distance he walked through the forest is a bit long for that. If he can't find the part of the road where he entered it originally, he wouldn't be able to find his way through the forest backwards.
