As Gonron Egg is almost certainly getting axed in a few weeks (likely by chapter 17), let's take this work as a model of what NOT to do for a weekly shonen battle manga:
- Do not fill the first half dozen chapters with villains of the week
- Do not wait 10 chapters to introduce the supporting cast
- Do not immediately up the power scaling after each fight instead of expanding on technique and nuance
- Do not fall into the terrible writing cliche of assigning a number to power level, Drakarch hearts in this case
- Do not make your main characters to be flawless saints, without a bone of selfishness or doubt in their bodies
This list could go on for a dozen more points but I think you understand what I mean. This manga is boring, but not because it has bad ideas. It simply has no ideas or ways to expand on them. All in all, there is nothing here. A bad manga with bad ideas would be more entertaining if only for the fact that it would surprise you with the depths it sinks to. Gonron Egg just treads water, not making a single splash or wave in the process.
