Characters both in Western sequential-art story-telling and in manga say a great deal more out loud when they think that they are alone than do people typically. That alone is not a big deal, but having so much story-telling turn on such speech being overheard (“It's a good thing that the witch doesn't know that I have the gem!”) is unfortunate.
