I guess they limited their source of energy in a containment, but it's just that, a guess.

Sounds like Bio-Meat Nectar, about an outbreak of genetically engineered creatures that eat anything organic (plastic, hydrocarbons, and cellulose all ok). Mature bio-meat are slaughtered and fed to humans and animals (they're delicious). They escape containment and begin eating everything. Protagonists are high school students, just like in this.
