Might I remind you that it was you who established scanlation to be, and I quote, "what's effectively a donation to a community"? Their donation was to a website, made by uploading the chapter, and meant for the people who visit that site. Whether that site was MangaDex or their own does not change this fact.

Now would you please stop moving the goalpost and answer the question: "why do you think you have any right to demand where they donate and to whom?"

It is a lot to ask though. You have a site that gives updates to people when chapters are out, nearly everyone uploads to, and provides free hosting for the chapters without ads. Why should anyone have to go out of the way to check some other site for a single chapter? If you want to upload to your site as well, then whatever, that's pretty good for preservation. But exclusively uploading somewhere else or even time gating really, is just a shitty thing. Pretty much kills any popularity a manga could have.

No one uses their own money to get raws unless they're an idiot. Groups claiming to use money for raws are lying, and even if they weren't it's at most a few bucks. Anyone in the know, knows there's sites to get raws off from mags and if you ask around there's people that will get you them if they don't exist. And what "other expenses" are there? The expenses for the site that they don't need?

And of course they're not being paid, there's no money in translation. Otherwise you'd see big companies doing it. See how comikey and mangaup are shit? That's because there's no money to go around. The only exceptions are jump and jnovel club because a subscription exists and even jnovel has deeper monetization. There's loads of companies and scan groups that have popped up and tried to make something out of it and they all failed.

No one minds if you post a kofi or patreon, people do however mind when you hold chapters for arbitrary reasons to try to make money. It just ruins the experience for everyone.

"Hold chapters"? You're acting like reading translated manga is your god-given right or something and that if someone translates a chapter it's their duty to upload it somewhere of your choosing. This explains your comparison of scanslating manga to donating to the homeless.
