I don't think you know what the phrase "culture war" means. Some of the biggest corporations have harvested all the data in the world without compensating anybody for it, are selling that tech (the same one made possible by said theft) to other corporations who can't wait to replace as many people's jobs as possible with it, and if that wasn't enough this tech requires building more and more highly energy-intensive and environmentally destructive computer farms ("data centers"). Any reasonable person, whose brain hasn't rotted through from talking to ChatGPT for hours at a day, should be worried about how all of this will impact the job market, the environment, and the economy.

And if you look at the Twitter bio of Japanese manga artists, a lot of them explicitly say it right there that they don't approve of their art being used to train AI. I don't think Yazawa the character is "on my side" or whatever, but it's also funny to assume that the mangaka included that detail completely at random, given that as an artist his and his colleagues ability to secure work is threatened by GenAI corporations.

But I don't even have to speculate about the future impact of the industry to be tired of it. The fact that computer parts became more expensive thanks to the AI rush, is a nuisance that is already happening and is very much about money. Sam Altman and his billionaire friends ended up making actually useful technology more expensive, in the pursuit of the machine that shits out a lower quality facsimile of everything. That should be enough to annoy anybody who just doesn't like getting ripped off. Is that a left vs right culture war issue too?

I'm against a lot of what AI is used for but a depiction of AI in a manga, not use of it, not promoting it, just the depiction has set you lot off so damn much that it's fucking suffocating any discussion about the actual chapter.

That's culture war overspill and it's fucking insufferable.

I was drawn back to this thread after getting a reaction, and figured this was worth responding to:

This depends heavily on where you're looking. I agree that harvesting people's private data is a crime. But often, what I see called "theft" is acts that aren't criticised at all when individual people do them. An artist who makes fanart of an IP doesn't get the same vitriol thrown at someone who uses GenAI for even non-fanart images, even though the artist is looking at copyrighted images and not compensating the original artist.

New tech does result in some jobs being lost. It also changes existing jobs and adds new jobs. And the kinds of work that AI is best at doing (currently) are repetitive, tedious tasks that humans don't actually enjoy doing.

The environmental impact of AI is greatly exaggerated. The rise in price of many computer parts is annoying, but I don't see it as a reason to reject a new technology. And I can see why many people perceive AI as always being lower quality, but that's more due to spamming rather than inherent to AI. Sticking with AI art for now (as that's also the form shown in this chapter), I'd suggest checking out the home page of Civitai or a similar site to see what people with experience and effort can achieve with GenAI.
